ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2010
The Essex Region members invite you to attend The British Woodcarvers Association AGM 2010 to be held at the Mayflower High School, Stock Road, Billericay, Essex, on Saturday 8th and Sunday May 2010. The cost is £20 and this includes lunch on Saturday, tea and coffee on Saturday and Sunday, and the Masterclasses. If you are just attending the AGM, this is free.
Mayflower High School in Billericay, Essex is the venue chosen by our leader Ken Veal for the excellent facilities it offers. Ken, several fellow members and myself attend a regular weekly adult education class (which we fondly regard as a very sociable club), led by Peter Benson. Many of us have been members for up to ten years and know the facility very well. Beginners are welcomed and as well as excellent tuition from Peter they enjoy help and friendship from the more experienced members.
Its great!!! Brian Pitcher

SPECIAL CARVING COMPETITION
For Members Attending the 2010 Annual General Meeting
Essex Region invites all BWA members who attend the AGM to put on their thinking caps and sharpen up their carving tools to create a unique entry for our AGM ESSEX CARVING COMPETITION.
The theme of the competition is
A Well Known Phrase or Saying
As far as size is concerned, small would be good, but to qualify the rule is that your entry must fit within a six inch cube.
We may ask our guest Masterclass speakers to help us in the judging of the entries. They are very qualified to give their opinions;
Allan Mechen
Allan is former chairman of Hampshire Branch of the BWA, Carving teacher at West Sussex College (4/5 times a year) and he takes evening classes in carving.
His talk is on the restoration of ships figureheads. He has taken on nine figureheads for the Royal Navy and his restoration method attempts to rectify 200 years of decay to restore them to last another 200 years.
Dave Wilkins
Dave is a traditional stickmaker with 20 years experience. He has had considerable success in stickmaking competitions and has taught stickmaking at adult education level. He has been woodcarving for the past 6 years. Dave will talk generally on stickmaking and specifically on jointing handles plus the use of horn and antler. He will bring numerous exhibits and be ready to help members.
Bill Prickett
Bill is a gifted woodsculpter who is regarded as amongst the most talented in the UK. He has won several awards and prizes and his work has been exhibited at various galleries including the Mall galleries, London, the SWLA (Society of Wildlife Artists) annual exhibition and Pensthorpe National Wildlife Carving and Sculpture Exhibitions where he has twice won the peoples choice award. His work has been sold at Christies and at the AGM Bill will demonstrate to us his method of carving a feather.
Additional attractions.
Need some help sharpening those tools? Peter Benson has agreed to run a tool sharpening tutorial throughout the weekend. Bring those stubbornly blunt gouges along.
Need some wood, carving gloves and other carving accessories? or maybe you just love books on our craft. There will be lots to get your juices running. Bring some cash.
